The Jarman Award 2013 was presented by Film London and Channel 4, in association with the Whitechapel Gallery, to John Smith.

The winner was selected from a shortlist of ten artists:

John Smith has been working since the 1970s and produced over 50 films, videos and installation works, and in the process making a vital contribution to moving image practice both nationally and internationally. His most recent film, Dad’s Stick, was like the main work submitted to the Jarman Award. This film is about the artist’s father, portrayed through the three objects that were shown to Smith before his father died. The film  won the Jean Vigo Prize for Best Director, Punto De Vista International Film Festival, Spain, the ARTE Prize for European Short Film and Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany.
