On the 17th August 2002 Tilda Swinton gave an extensive and extraordinary speech on the opening ceremony at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which she named In the Spirit of Derek Jarman . It is a speech about filmmaking and the British film industry in general and especially about Derek Jarman. She ends up with the words:

The Edinburgh International Film Festival is the world’s oldest continually running film festival. It presents UK and international films in all genres and lengths. 1993, Derek Jarman won The Michael Powell Award for the Best British Feature Film with his film Blue at this festival.
