Highlighted work from Derek Jarman, curated by his friend and working partner Isaac Julien is presented at the Serpentine Gallery between 23rd February and 13th April 2008 . The next two exhibitions of Derek Jarman: Brutal Beauty will be presented at the Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna/Austria and the Kunsthalle Zürich in Switzerland. After fourteen years of Jarman’s death this exhibition celebrates Jarman’s life and work – “the leading British filmmaker of his generation”, how the Serpentine Gallery described Jarman.
Isaac Julien designed and conceived a mesmerizing environment for this exhibition. From rarely seen films from the Jarman Super-8 archive shown at the Serpentine Gallery for the first time since the 1970s, to an installation of Jarman’s film Blue and a selection of his paintings will be presented on this exhibition. The premiere of the film Derek is also included in the show, featuring Tilda Swinton and directed by Isaac Julien. Owing to this tribute to Derek Jarman a new film award is launched, named the Jarman Award, presented by Film London and More4 in partnership with the Serpentine Gallery.
